Our story

Literacy: An Identity Worth Discovering

One co-founder left corporate life to teach in an underserved Foundation Phase classroom. The others discovered, through books, a world beyond their childhood zip code—and went on to unlikely career paths as global Business and Technology leaders. Their stories are different, but their belief is shared: literacy is not only a skill. It is the cornerstone of a confident identity that every child deserves a chance to discover.

South Africa’s early childhood literacy crisis is well documented and deeply consequential. Foundation Phase is the leverage point with the highest-return window in a child’s educational journey. There are also other compounding barriers in underserved schools, and this is where we have chosen to start our work. In partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education, The Khani Foundation delivers a comprehensive, evidence-backed Foundation Phase program designed to strengthen early learning where it is most impactful.

Our model

The Five-Pillar Model

A holistic, replicable school improvement model that transforms the Foundation Phase experience for every child in a Khani-partnered school.

01
Classroom Infrastructure
Safe, stimulating environments redesigned to NAEYC and HEAD Project standards. A child’s environment communicates worth.
02
Nutrition
No child sits through a lesson unable to concentrate due to food insecurity. Nutrition support embedded into the school day.
03
Literacy
Structured phonics, comprehension, and home-language fluency — with classroom libraries and ongoing educator development.
04
Technology
Age-appropriate tablet learning curated for Foundation Phase. Device procurement, content, and educator training included.
05
Play-Based Learning
Developmentally grounded pedagogy that equips educators to honour childhood as the vehicle — not the obstacle — to learning.
